Lesson11

〈explanation of my book〉

The theme of this book is my first experiences on trips. This book shows what I experienced for the first time in my life when I went to various places. For example, harvesting long onion in Saitama, listening to a live cembalo performance of reader’s theater in Maebashi and eating a crab gratin in Osaka. In addition, this book shows not only my experiences but also how I felt in these experiences. I would be grateful if you would read my book casting a spotlight on these feelings.

Each poem comes from vivid memories in my life, which form what I am now and give me the power to live. These memories are about some experiences which are once in a lifetime because these experiences are what I experienced on trips and trip is what we can experience only the time and only the place.

Trip also opens the gate of new world and excited. I hope readers of my book could, even just a little, experience something like that through my book.

Explanation of each poem

1. The first poem describes a moment when I went to Karuizawa with my friends and eating egg sandwiches in the early spring of 2018. We want to eat egg sandwiches of a cafe for the breakfast. The cafe located where is distant from the Karuizawa station and the day was cold. However, we had walked toward the cafe for an hour. Although we couldn’t seem to arrive there, finally we were able to arrive there. We were given energy to go back to the station by the delicious egg sandwiches and walked the same way with a light step.

2.The second poem describes a moment when I visited a temple and I was healed by a dog. At that time, I was eighteen years old. I didn’t recognize what I want to do and I was about to lose sight of even who I am. So, I want to tell someone that I agonized over these things. However, on the other hand, I didn’t want someone who knows me to recognize my agony. Then, I went to a temple to talk with a chief priest but there was only a dog. The dog allowed me to stroke her head gently. I wasn’t able to talk with someone but I was healed by a dog.

3. The third poem describes a moment when I harvested long onion for the first time. This is a beginning of that I engage in farming as a part-time job now. To pull out a long onion, I gripped it with hands putting on work globes and I put my strength into the leg muscle. When I pulled a long onion out, my foots went down to the gland. The moment which I pulled out it, I saw the beautiful sky. Then, I looked around and saw an old school, huge fields and clouds drifting slowly. I hear a voice of a bird.

4. The forth poem describes a moment when my father took me recreation. At that time, I was a high school student in three grade and I was brooded over my course to take after graduate. We went to a stalactite cave by our car. After getting out of the car, we walked to the stalactite cave. It was warm and calm, so it was nice day to walking. On the way, I saw many bugs. They were very cheerful, and when I walked in the stalactite cave, I felt myself and history of the stalactite cave. Although my father didn’t say anything, my worries fade away through this recreation.

5. The fifth poem describes a moment when I listen to a live cembalo performance in reader’s theater for the first time. I was in a concert hall which is in Maebashi. The story of this reader’s theater was about Mozart and there was a role as cembalo. A performer -he played a role as cembalo- said “This is the last moment I can perform this song”. Then, screen changed to blue and a performer of cembalo began to play the music- Violin Sonata in E minor, K.304 (Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus )-.

Lesson10

I found some similarities in the concept map. First, half of the poems I wrote are about school. Especially, there are many poems related to “teacher” and “friends”. Second, nearly one third of my poems are about nature such as creatures and the sky. However, the theme which is common with the most poems is that they are written about the first experiences on the trips. In addition, these experiences are vivid memories in my life. They form what I am now and give me the power to live. I want to leave these precious memories as a poem book.

Therefore, I choose [my first experiences on the trips] for my book’s theme, and I define “trips” as going to the places which I didn’t visit before then or the places which I was not familiar with, although I have been there. For example, I went to “昌賢学園まえばしホール” on Maebashi to listen to a reading theater. I went there for the first time then, so I think this experience as a trip. Plus, I went to Takasaki several times but I was not familiar with the area except where around the Takasaki station, so the experience written in the ninth poem is also a trip.

Trip is excited and opens the gate of new world. I wish readers experience something like that through my book, even just a little.

Lesson4

What I think when I read Chamcharatsri’s (2013) article is that writing a poem about personally significant experience is difficult. When we want tell something general, we can tell them by common expression, but if we want express a individual experience, we may have to tell them in our own words. Plus, expressing personal experience sometimes involves being embarrassed.

However, we may be able to reduce the feeling by writing personal poems in L2. Our L2 which is generally English, is directly expression. Therefore, I think that we may feel less shame when we express our personal feeling and experience in English than in Japanese. There are other good points of poetry writing in L2. For example, we have difficulty to write a English poem because of inadequate understanding about the English nuance and having a limited vocabulary, but the difficulty help us get a better understanding of both L1 and L2. In addition, we can write a poem focusing on not writing form but its content. Thanks to this, we can look back on our experiences more deeply.

Poetry writing in L2 is very effective training of use L2. If we become to have an excellent command of L2 like L1, we get the process which is to choose L1 or L2 on express our feeling and idea. In other words, we can extend our range of expression by becoming to use both L1 and L2 in high level.

When I read this article, I also think that writing a poem and its getting accepted is very valuable experience.  To be accepted ourselves by someone is pleasure, and the pleasure give us self-confidence in expressing ourselves. We can get the experience like that through poetry writing.

Lesson3

I understood that even simple expression -short or not using difficult words- is enough to express our feelings by reading Iida’s (2016) article. Before I read the article, I don’t think it is easy for me to write a poem in Japanese, much less a poem in English. However, I was able to get a little hope that I may be able to write a poem in English.

Furthermore, I was under the illusion that I was in that situation and I felt writer’s feelings of the moment, when I read the English poems written by Japanese University Students. I realized that we can express and understand individual experiences and feelings by writing and reading a poem.

I like the poem “Spinach” (Iida, 2006, p.129) describes a lot of spinach which can’t be sold due to radioactive contamination. I can sympathize with this poem because of two reasons.

First, I engage in farming as a part-time job and know how hard farmers work to grow crops, plus I experienced part of the difficulty to sell vegetables as a product. Therefore, I fully understand how this writer feel which is expressed in part of the  poem “They look beautiful   They look so delicious    However, they can’t ship” Especially, the pause  between “They look beautiful   They look so delicious” and “However, they can’t ship” expresses it very well.

The other reason is my grandparents live in Fukushima and I was stopped eating a fruit which beared in my grandmother’s garden because the fruit may be contaminated by radiation. Then, I was very sad and disappointed. “If the Fukushima nuclear accident hadn’t happened, I could have eaten the fruit and we would have not had to worry about radiation.” I thought. I think the poem Spinach expresses a similar feeling to this, but the hatred to radiation may be much stronger than me.  Indented paragraphs between “The reason is ” and “Radioactive contamination” emphasizes “Radioactive contamination”.

From the above, I choose “Spinach” for the my best poem in Iida’s (2016) article.

Lesson2

I understood three things about poetry writing through reading Hanauer’s (2003) article.

First, poem can develop reader’s mind which they respect individuality. Poem used to be considered in instrumentalism and empiricism, and taken lightly. However, recently it is revaluated because the uniqueness of poetry writing comes to be recognized as a meaningful way to understand something. The uniqueness of poetry writing is that it is composed of personal experience and feeling, and provides readers opportunities to understand a poem individually and subjectively. From the above, it can promote reader’s attitude which value personality that contact with thoughts of people belonging to the different communities through understanding each poems individually.

Then, poem can help change the society to more multicultural society. This is involved in the thing mentioned in the second paragraph. Certainly, poem can be understood individually, but the understanding connects to the society. Therefore, poem has a power that promote multiculturalism.

Finally, I learned why poetry writing is useful for us. Poetry opens the door which lead us to the new world. In other words, we can get experiential new knowledge by understanding and analysis of a poem.

In the future, through trying to write and read poems actually, I want to realize that I learned about writing poems by reading this article.
